Reiki is a gentle yet powerful energy healing practice that originated in early twentieth century Japan and continues to gain global recognition as a complementary approach to wellness, rooted in the teachings of Mikao Usui who described it as a method of channeling universal life force energy to support balance in mind, body, and spirit, and although it is spiritual in nature it is not tied to any specific religion, allowing people of all backgrounds to experience its calming and restorative effects without changing their beliefs or traditions.

The word Reiki is commonly translated as “universal life energy,” with “Rei” referring to a higher wisdom or universal consciousness and “Ki” representing the vital life force that flows through all living beings, reiki to concepts such as Qi in Chinese medicine and Prana in Indian traditions, and practitioners believe that when this energy flows freely a person experiences harmony and vitality, but when it becomes blocked or depleted it may contribute to stress, emotional imbalance, or physical discomfort.

A typical Reiki session involves a practitioner placing their hands lightly on or just above the recipient’s body in a series of positions, allowing energy to flow where it is most needed, and many recipients describe sensations of warmth, tingling, gentle pulsations, or deep relaxation, while others simply feel calm and peaceful, as if they have entered a meditative state that allows the nervous system to reset and the mind to release accumulated tension.

Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatment rather than as a replacement, and many hospitals and wellness centers around the world now incorporate it into supportive care programs to help reduce stress, anxiety, and discomfort, recognizing that relaxation itself plays a significant role in the body’s natural healing processes and that emotional well-being can positively influence physical recovery.

One of the central principles of Reiki practice is the belief that the practitioner does not direct the energy with personal intention but instead serves as a channel through which universal life force flows, guided by a higher intelligence that understands the recipient’s needs better than the conscious mind, and this perspective encourages humility, compassion, and trust in the process rather than forceful effort or manipulation.
